American youth Ash (played by Bruce Campbell) discovers a book called the Book of the Dead while vacationing with his girlfriend Linda (played by Bridget Fonda). The book contains various mysterious funerary customs and rituals for summoning spirits, and more strangely, this book that should not exist in the world possesses powerful and evil magic. In his struggle against it, Ash loses his girlfriend and his right hand, but ultimately is overpowered and transported back to the medieval times of 600 years ago by the Book of the Dead. His strange attire leads to him being captured as a spy by knights, and after a series of twists, Ash decides to help the king defeat the monsters conjured by the Book of the Dead, which is also his only way back to modern society... This film won the Golden Raven Award at the 1993 Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, the Critics' Award at the 1993 Portugal Fantastic Film Festival, and the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films in 1994.
