Abby Dale (Nathan Fillion) once had a happy family, but just as the three of them were dining at a restaurant, they were attacked by a gunman. Abby's wife and son were killed instantly, and the man subsequently took his own life. Three months later, Abby still cannot overcome the grief of losing his wife and son, and in his despair, he chooses to end his life. However, fate intervenes, and Abby is brought back to life by the doctors' efforts. Shortly thereafter, Abby discovers that he can hear strange voices and even see a white light surrounding certain people. He ultimately realizes that those enveloped in white light are individuals whose time is short. Using this unusual ability, he begins to try to save the poor souls wandering near death, but he quickly realizes that the process of death cannot be changed arbitrarily, and he must pay a price for it...
