In order to bring his father, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, back to a normal life, Will Rodman (played by James Franco) has been dedicated to developing a gene therapy drug called "Cure," conducting drug tests on a gorilla. While the company has lost confidence, Will continues the experiments at home and achieves success with a gorilla named Caesar. With the help of primatologist Caroline (played by Freida Pinto), Will discovers that Caesar's intelligence has greatly increased. However, society is unable to accept Caesar's high intelligence, and he is sent to an ape sanctuary. The brutal treatment at the sanctuary leads Caesar to retaliate using his intelligence, ultimately freeing other captive apes and administering Cure to them. This sparks a war between a group of highly intelligent apes and humans. The film was nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 84th Academy Awards.
