However, due to severe non-cooperation between the two divisions, the 34th Division found itself surrounded by four Chinese armies, resulting in what is known as the "Shanggao Battle." Chinese forces reported killing over 15,000 Japanese soldiers, including Colonel Hamada, while the Japanese reported over a thousand casualties.
