"Short Circuit" is a science fiction comedy film released in 1986 by TriStar Pictures, a subsidiary of New Century Productions. NOVA Robotics developed five military robots, one of which, "No. 5", is struck by lightning one day and suddenly gains self-awareness, calling itself "Johnny 5". It escapes onto the streets, being viewed by humans as a significant threat, while the other four robots are sent to hunt it down. It must convince its creator that "it is a form of life, not a war machine." During a short circuit, it breaks into the home of animal-loving Stephanie and learns human wisdom and humanity through interacting with people, ultimately refusing to return to the weapons company to serve as their killing tool.
