The story takes place in the Stalin era of the former Soviet Union, where the protagonist Leo Demidov is a Soviet State Security (MGB) agent. He is loyal, loves his country, and is full of idealism. As a war hero, Leo enjoys special treatment from the state; not only does his family live in a luxurious district of Moscow, but his parents also receive a good apartment. Although there are secret arrests and torture, Leo believes it is all for the sake of national interest. However, a series of child murders change the trajectory of Leo's life.
