Christoph Waltz and Willem Dafoe will star in the Western thriller "Dead For A Dollar." This marks Waltz's first appearance in a Western since "Django Unchained," where he will reprise the role of a bounty hunter. The film will be directed and written by legendary filmmaker Walter Hill (director of "Crossroads," "The Warriors," "48 Hrs." & multiple "Alien" scripts), set in New Mexico and Chihuahua, Mexico in 1897. It tells the story of renowned bounty hunter Max Borlund, who is hired to find and return the politically radical wife of Santa Fe merchant Nathan Price, Rachel Price. Max is informed that Rachel has been kidnapped by a black deserter named Elijah Jones and held as a hostage in Mexico. As Max travels south across the U.S.-Mexico border, he encounters his adversary—American expatriate, professional gambler, and criminal Joe Cribbens (played by Dafoe), whom Max captured and sent to prison years prior. Max's journey deep into the Mexican desert to find Rachel and Elijah leads him to discover that Rachel is willingly escaping her abusive husband, and that she has fallen in love with Elijah. Now, Max is torn: should he bring Rachel back to America as per the contract to return her to her employer, or help Rachel gain her freedom while dealing with pursuing bounty hunters and his longstanding enemy?
