Melissa (Amy Smart) and Chinese Yulin (Tim Chiou) are a newlywed couple from the United States who have chosen Yulin's hometown—a county in Guangdong, China—for their honeymoon. The exotic culture intrigues and surprises the born-and-bred American girl Melissa, but perhaps they have picked the wrong time. It is the seventh month of the lunar calendar, and the Ghost Festival is approaching. Local guide Ping (Dennis Chan) drives the couple to Yulin's home. In the dead of night, the winding roads and unfamiliar surroundings cause Ping to lose his way, leading them to a strange village. He gets out to ask for directions but never returns.
