Beatrice Hansdowne is a widow living in a bungalow in the suburbs of Connecticut with her two daughters. She spends her days reading the classified ads in the newspaper, filled with vague hopes for her future, while complaining about the government and society. Unknowingly, she passes her disillusionment onto her eldest daughter, Ruth.
