Drug enforcement officer Newlyweds Miguel "Mike" Vargas (Charlton Heston) and his wife Susie (Janet Leigh) arrive at the U.S.-Mexico border. An explosion occurs on the road, and Vargas suspects it is related to drug traffickers, so he starts an investigation with the local police. Hank Quinlan (Orson Welles) is the police captain with a notorious reputation in the area. The local police focus their suspicions on a man named Sanchez, but Vargas finds evidence in Sanchez's home proving he is not the criminal. However, Quinlan insists that Sanchez is the perpetrator. Vargas studies previous cases handled by Quinlan and begins to have doubts about this famous police captain. Meanwhile, Vargas's wife Susie is kidnapped and framed by a group in their hotel, leading Vargas to suspect that Quinlan is behind everything. What will be the outcome of Vargas's confrontation with Quinlan? This film, written, directed, and starring Orson Welles, has three versions: the original release in 1958, a extended version from 1976, and a 1998 version that may better align with Welles' vision.
