As an American student studying in Japan, Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) has been living a life of part-time work and study. This time, she takes a job caring for an elderly woman, Emma (Grace Zabriskie), who suffers from a rare disease. Emma lives alone in a large, dilapidated house, which shows the marks of time's neglect on both her and the property. Karen initially believes Emma's strange behavior is simply due to her mental condition. As time passes, Karen senses that something extraordinarily terrifying is hidden in the shadows of the house. Noises come from the empty staircase, a strange boy appears and disappears, and all signs point to one thing—she is the unwelcome presence in this old house. With those around her facing misfortunes, what kind of story has unfolded here that has led to the current curse? Karen is determined to investigate further.
