A mysterious death catches the attention of paleontologist Kelly (Bridget Fonda). To uncover the truth of the event, Kelly travels a long distance to the scene of the incident—an ancient lake. What happens next convinces Kelly that something terrible is lurking beneath the calm surface of the lake. Her speculations create a stir in the small town; some people believe her, while others dismiss her claims. Just as public opinion reaches a peak, a tragedy occurs when a tourist is dragged into the lake by an unknown entity, making everyone aware of the seriousness of the situation. Kelly, along with local administrator Jack (Bill Pullman), Sheriff Hank (Brendan Gleeson), and others, investigate the ancient lake. Shockingly, they discover an extraordinarily fierce and gigantic prehistoric crocodile at the bottom of the lake.
