A mysterious death catches the attention of paleontologist Kelly (Bridget Fonda). To uncover the truth of the event, Kelly travels a long distance to the scene of the incident—an ancient lake. What happens next convinces Kelly that something terrible is lurking beneath the calm surface of the lake. Her speculations create a stir in the small town; some people believe her, while others dismiss her claims. Just as public opinion reaches a peak, a tragedy occurs when a tourist is dragged into the lake by an unknown entity, making everyone aware of the seriousness of the situation.
