Julian (Ryan Gosling) has been on the run in Thailand for refuge for ten years due to a murder, running a boxing club in Bangkok as a front for underground drug trafficking with his brother Billy (Tom Burke). Billy draws the attention of the Thai police after raping and murdering a sixteen-year-old Thai girl. The girl’s father, incited by police chief Chang (Vithaya Pansringarm), kills Billy. Julian and their mother Crystal (Kristin Scott Thomas) go to Bangkok to retrieve the body of their eldest son. Filled with revenge, Crystal is furious to find her weak and ineffectual son Julian and hires killers to eliminate a series of people connected to Billy's death. Julian, initially wanting to let Chang go and end the matter, is ultimately drawn into the bloody killings due to his mother's escalating madness and coercion. This film is the second collaboration between director Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling after "Drive."
