Two Supreme Court judges are assassinated, and law school prodigy Darby (played by Julia Roberts) begins to investigate the case, drafting a report titled "The Pelican Brief." Darby approaches journalist Gray (played by Denzel Washington), who was the last person to see one of the judges alive, hoping to get his help in the investigation. One day, Gray receives a mysterious call from a person who claims to know the identity of the killer. Gray follows this person but fails to stop him. At this point, the President secretly orders relevant parties not to intervene in the case. Gray becomes suspicious and subsequently investigates the close relationship between the President and the Marlboro Group. All evidence suggests that Marlboro is intricately connected to the deaths of the two judges!
