At Africa's highest peak—the Kilimanjaro mountain—lies the corpse of a leopard amidst the white snow; what is it searching for? Harry (Gregory Peck) is a writer currently recuperating near Mount Kilimanjaro with his newlywed wife, Helen (Susan Hayward), taking care of him. Harry is tormented by illness, lost in hallucinations as he reflects on his life. In his youth, he was determined to become a writer, and his uncle told him that a writer must possess unwavering perseverance and endure long years of belief. Just after settling in Paris with his newlywed wife, Cynthia (Ava Gardner), the young and restless Harry did not stay at home but sought inspiration for his writing outside. Cynthia, who loved him dearly, kept her miscarriage from him to spare him feelings of guilt. When Harry learned the truth, he unfairly accused Cynthia, leading to her heartbreak and departure. After losing Cynthia, Harry met Countess Liz—a duchess from high society—and became lost in a life of excess. By the time he found clarity, his uncle had passed away, leaving behind a riddle for him to seek answers and find himself. It was during this time in Paris that he encountered Helen, who resembled Cynthia, yet by now, Harry was exhausted. Although Helen knew Harry did not love her, she remained deeply devoted. She accompanied him to the foot of Kilimanjaro in search of answers to life.
