The following is excerpted from: http://bc.cinema.com.hk/adhoc/alain-web/m9.html Wu Yusen's "The Killer" prototype. Alain Delon this time "returns to the right path," playing the role of law enforcer detective Jove, investigating a drug deal in a quiet seaside town, where he encounters the stunning Jaffey (Catherine Deneuve). Unfortunately, the story of handsome men and beautiful women does not guarantee happiness, as the beauty turns out to be the mistress of the drug lord and a friend. Two friends, one black and one white, fall in love with the same woman; how should they choose between friendship and love? Melville's minimalist style is fully realized in this film, with essential dialogue, brief scenes, and very little musical score, even Alain Delon's performance is more restrained than in other films. The opening scene of a robbery is cold yet powerful, utilizing wind and rain to create atmosphere, with exquisite staging that is far from ordinary genre films. Melville was already ill during the filming and this film became the director's last work.
