Architect John Baxter (Donald Sutherland) and his wife Laura (Julie Christie) have a son and a daughter. One day, their daughter mysteriously drowns. Laura is consumed by grief. Due to work obligations, John takes Laura to Venice for the restoration of a church. There, Laura meets two elderly women, one of whom is blind and is said to be a medium who can see the Baxter couple's daughter. Laura faints, but upon waking, she seems to shed the shadow of her daughter's death. The medium tells Laura that if John continues to stay in Venice, there will be danger. Laura urges John to leave quickly, but he does not believe in the so-called medium and continues his work in Venice. Sure enough, John has an accident while working, and their son studying in the UK falls ill. Laura hurriedly takes a flight back home, while John discovers Laura with the two elderly women in Venice. The story unfolding in Venice becomes increasingly intricate... This film was ranked first in Time Out's 2011 "100 Greatest British Films of All Time."
