The unexpected miscarriage devastates John (played by Peter Sarsgaard) and Kate (played by Vera Farmiga), who were eagerly anticipating the arrival of their baby. Kate is on the brink of a mental breakdown, and their marriage is in jeopardy. To save their crumbling marriage, the couple decides to adopt a child from an orphanage. There, they meet the somewhat eccentric little girl Esther (played by Isabelle Fuhrman). Esther's unique aura captivates the couple, and she ultimately becomes a part of their family. However, with Esther's arrival, a series of bizarre events begins to unfold. Kate has a vague sense that this angelic-looking little girl harbors a hidden side…
