The arrival of the prince brings a shine to the estate of Leonardo (played by Richard Briers), and the prince's confidant Claudio (played by Robert Sean Leonard) falls in love with Leonardo's daughter Hero (played by Kate Beckinsale). With the prince's help, the two reveal their feelings for each other, and their wedding plans are set in motion. However, John's (played by Keanu Reeves), Leonardo's brother who harbors resentment towards the prince, intends to ruin this happy moment. He brings Claudio to the window of Hero's room and instructs his men and Hero's maid to engage in lewd acts inside the room. Claudio mistakes the maid for Hero, and filled with sadness and anger, he publicly accuses Hero of infidelity at their wedding, fulfilling John's scheme. However, the truth eventually comes to light.
