Pike (played by William Holden) is a failed bandit who, along with his accomplices, not only botches a bank robbery but also finds himself being hunted by the bounty hunter Thornton (played by Robert Ryan). Fortunately, he receives help from the Indian youth Anchi (played by Jaime Sánchez), allowing him to escape. Following Anchi, Pike and his gang arrive at the Mexican border, where the brutal and volatile warlord Mapache (played by Emilio Fernández) and his followers are stationed.
