Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins), a postal worker currently employed in New York, is a retired veteran who faced life-threatening situations during the Vietnam War. The fragmented memories that he cannot bear to revisit constantly torment his every nerve—his failed first marriage, the death of his son, and the deep scars left by post-traumatic stress from the war. He often experiences hallucinations of being pursued during his service in Vietnam, with details that are both familiar and strange, blurring the line between reality and illusion. His current wife tries to help Jacob forget these painful memories, but the entanglements between dreams and reality lead Jacob to completely lose his sanity. Whenever he faces life-and-death situations, Jacob awakens in another space and time. The confusion of what is real and what is illusion leaves him trapped between the worlds of reality and fantasy.
