Centuries ago, Doctor Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) was a respected monk telling eternal tales in the secluded hills. One day, the devil Nick (Tom Waits) unexpectedly appeared. Lured by him, Parnassus made a wager with the devil and ultimately gained eternal life. Now, in the present, the doctor travels with a fantastical circus consisting of his daughter Valentina (Lily Cole), the young Anton (Andrew Garfield), and the dwarf Percy (Verne Troyer). As Valentina approaches her 16th birthday, Nick reappears. It turns out that the doctor once fell in love with a woman (Lily Cole), but eternal life did not grant eternal youth. To be with his beloved, he made another foolish wager with the devil, trading his youth for the promise of offering his first child to the devil.
