"Birth of Hope" is set before Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy: it tells the story of Aragorn's parents, Arathorn and Gilraen, from their meeting to falling in love, and the birth of Aragorn, as well as their struggles with their people in the North against the threat of Orcs, wandering through Middle-earth. This story is derived from several passages in the appendices of Tolkien's novel "The Lord of the Rings." This film, like the previously introduced "The Search for Gollum," is also a non-commercial film, produced entirely by fans of "The Lord of the Rings" without any commercial operations. The initial concept for this film began in 2003 when director and actress Kate Madison decided to create a film for the "Lord of the Rings Fan Film Festival," but this small idea gradually evolved into an ambitious project. In April 2006, they produced the first teaser trailer, and the film is still in production, expected to be completed in 2009, at which time it will be available for free download on the internet. The film has a runtime of approximately 60 minutes. Kate Madison, during an interview, said, "Birth of Hope can be seen as a prequel to the New Line film trilogy of 'The Lord of the Rings.' My goal is to make this film stand independently from those films while still complementing them." "Based on Tolkien's original works, we wanted to explore the stories of Aragorn's people and his parents, to show people more about the background story of Aragorn."
