Melina (voiced by Kelly Sheridan) is a girl who loves the ocean. During a surfing competition, Melina encounters a dolphin named Zuma (voiced by Tabitha St. Germain), who tells her that she has a special ability to breathe underwater because her mother is the sea queen, Calista (voiced by Nicole Oliver), which means that Melina, who has been kept in the dark, is actually a mermaid princess. Melina, both shocked and delighted, shares the whole story with her friends Fallon (voiced by Nakia Burrise) and Heidi (voiced by Maryke Hendrikse), who are both happy for her. Unfortunately, Melina learns that evil and frightening things are happening in the underwater kingdom of Aquafina, and she is the only one who can save the kingdom from disaster.
