In the wake of her mother's death, beautiful small-town teacher Stella (played by Elizabeth Banks) receives various forms of care from local tycoon Grant (played by Michael Rooker). After marrying him, she still works hard to be a good wife despite her many grievances. One day, after a heated argument, Grant storms off and is invaded by a mysterious alien organism. The next morning, he returns home with a drastically changed demeanor. Meanwhile, pets in the town begin to mysteriously disappear, and Brenda (played by Brenda James), a girl who had been drinking with Grant at a bar, also goes missing. After discovering Grant's decaying and mutated face, a terrified Stella seeks help from the town sheriff Bill and his deputies (played by Nathan Fillion), but everyone is too frightened, allowing Grant to escape. The group decides to hunt Grant at a nearby farm, unintentionally unleashing a strange creature that puts the entire town in extreme danger. The film was nominated for the Best Horror Film Award by the American Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Film Association in 2007 and won the Saturn Award for Best Makeup.
