In late 18th century New York, the police still relied on ancient methods of investigation, employing torture on criminals. Young officer Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) firmly believes in a scientific approach to solving crimes, which leads to his alienation from his colleagues in the city. He is sent to a small town called Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of grisly murders. The legend of the "Headless Horseman" has long haunted Sleepy Hollow. It is said that he was a mercenary from the Black Forest, who lost his head in battle, and his tormented spirit now roams the area. On dark, stormy nights, he rides swiftly on horseback, wielding a large axe to sever the heads of any unfortunate travelers who pass through. Within two months, three people in the town have met a grim fate. Crane moves into the home of local wealthy man Baltus Van Tassel (Michael Gambon). Initially skeptical of the "Headless Horseman" legend, Crane's skepticism is shattered when he witnesses the Horseman behead the town's constable, compelling him to believe in the existence of the legend and strengthening his resolve to uncover the truth. After an extensive investigation, Crane begins to suspect Van Tassel. Meanwhile, his budding romance with Van Tassel’s daughter, Katrina (Christina Ricci), is cruelly disrupted by reality. Just as Crane thinks he has unraveled the truth and prepares to leave Sleepy Hollow in despair, unexpected changes occur...
