Although Sarah (played by Jennifer Connelly) is just a child herself, she still has to take on the responsibility of caring for her little brother Toby (played by Toby Froud). Unfortunately, Toby is a disobedient child, and in his endless crying and tantrums, Sarah quickly loses all her patience. In the fairy tale that Sarah reads, there is a little fairy king who can grant wishes. Frustrated, Sarah makes a wish, hoping that he will take her annoying brother away. To her surprise, the wish comes true, and the fairy king Jareth (played by David Bowie) appears before her and takes Toby away. Jareth tells Sarah that if she wants to rescue her brother, she must navigate a vast and complex labyrinth within a given time. If she fails, Toby will remain in the fairy world forever and will never return home. To atone for her mistakes, brave Sarah resolutely embarks on an adventurous journey.
