In the film, the main character Manolo (voiced by Mexican actor Diego Luna) must defeat his rival Joaquin (voiced by Channing Tatum) to win the heart of his beloved Maria (voiced by Zoe Saldana). To do this, he not only has to surpass Manolo in swordsmanship and face the fencing expert Maria herself, but he also must traverse "The Land of the Remembered," resist various temptations, and return to the living. The film is vibrant and colorful, filled with elements of Mexican culture. Mexicans believe that death is the end of life and the beginning of a new one. The first two days of November celebrate the traditional holiday "Dia de Muertos," during which the nation celebrates with masks, enjoying festivities, and bread and sweets decorated with skull images. The colors, instruments, and even food in "The Land of the Remembered," as well as Manolo's skeletal design, draw inspiration from the traditions of "Dia de Muertos."
