In the past in Korea, many children were used in shamanic rituals, confined in jars until they died, with their souls trapped in bells. Today in Korea, many shamans still use bells to summon spirits; it is said that the most famous shamans are mute. Shuxi (Hye-kyo Song) was born into a prestigious family known for its shamans. To escape this fate, she dropped out of Sacred Women's University and married Peter, who grew up in the United States, through an arranged marriage, moving far away with her husband and mother-in-law to live in America. Upon her arrival in the foreign land, Shuxi struggled to adapt to her entirely new environment, practicing Christianity and eating Western food with her family.
