This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Romanian theologian Mircea Eliade. In 1938, philosopher Dominique Matei (played by Tim Roth), over seventy years old, intended to commit suicide but was suddenly struck by lightning. Severely burned, Dominique was treated by Romanian doctor Professor Stankulescu (played by Bruno Ganz), and after recovering, he surprisingly found himself rejuvenated with a split personality. Not only that, Dominique also developed extraordinary abilities such as learning in dreams, clairvoyance, and psychokinesis. To evade the pursuit of Nazi doctor Rudolf (played by André Hennicke), Dominique used aliases and traveled through Switzerland, Romania, Malta, and India until the end of World War II. In the 1960s, during a mountain climbing expedition, Dominique encountered a woman named Vellalnica (played by Alexandra Maria Lara), who looked exactly like his late fiancée, Laura. After being rescued by Dominique from a mountain accident, Vellalnica gained the ability to trace the origins of language in dreams, but this accelerated her aging. Dominique, on one hand, hoped Vellalnica would help him complete his work on the origins of language and time, while on the other hand, he was unwilling to see his beloved perish young, torn by his inner conflict... This film was nominated for Best Cinematography at the Independent Spirit Awards.
