"The Glory of My Father" and "My Mother's Castle" are warm stories set in a small village in Provence in the early 20th century. Both films are adaptations of autobiographical novels written by Marcel Pagnol, recounting the author's childhood memories, also known as "First Visit to the Sunny Days" and "Goodbye Sunny Days." The plot of "The Glory of My Father" describes the Marseill family and their uncle's family renting a villa in the quaint Provence area for summer vacation, during which many amusing events occur, making Marcel fall deeply in love with the land. The story begins by introducing the family's life, where the father is a strict teacher, the mother constantly worries that Marcel will explode from reading too many books, and Marcel, on the contrary, spends all his time looking for books to read, even cookbooks, while the uncle is a boastful civil servant.
This film is Marcel Pagnol's childhood memories, adapted from the prose-style comedies of the famous French writer's childhood anecdotes, and both "The Glory of My Father" and "My Mother's Castle" are directed by Yves Robert, making them sister films. It is a delightful coming-of-age comedy that vividly portrays the picturesque landscapes of the region. Moreover, Provence is also the setting for the story of "The Riders on the Roof."
Adapted from the eponymous biographical novel, it is a classic French film that allows one to experience the warm memories of childhood in the French countryside amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.
