In 1976, 8-year-old Mary Daisy Dingle (voiced by Bethany Whitmore) is a little girl from Melbourne, Australia, who loves the animated series "Nobblette," sweetened condensed milk, and chocolate. Mary's mother is an alcoholic, and her father works at a tea packaging factory, spending his time making bird specimens. Lonely Mary has no friends, and one day, on a whim, she writes a letter to Max Jerry Horowitz (voiced by Philip Seymour Hoffman) in New York City asking where American kids come from, enclosing a cherry chocolate bar. 44-year-old Max, who suffers from autism and obesity, coincidentally also enjoys watching "Nobblette" and eating chocolate. Their pen pal relationship lasts from 1976 to 1994, during which they experience many ups and downs in life, until adult Mary (voiced by Toni Collette) finally comes to New York to visit Max… The film won the Best Animated Feature Award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 2009, the Crystal Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, and the top prize at the Ottawa International Animation Festival.
