By chance, Oscar discovers an envelope addressed to "Black" and a key. Oscar believes this is a clue left by his father for him to find something hidden behind the key. He shares this secret with his mute grandfather (played by Max von Sydow). From then on, every weekend, Oscar begins searching for people with the surname "Black" across five boroughs. His father had planned a "reconnaissance adventure" game with Oscar to find the sixth borough, telling him: never stop searching. This film is based on the novel by author Jonathan Safran Foer.
