A professor researching folklore opens a forbidden book and becomes possessed by an ancient Japanese thunder demon, who is determined to return and rule the world. The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense sends Hellboy and a team of agents to investigate the case. During the process, when Hellboy picks up a samurai sword, he enters a world filled with Japanese legends, brimming with various spirits and monsters.
