The story takes place in Victorian England. Katherine (played by Florence Pugh) is born into a poor family and is sold to the wealthy landowner Alexander (played by Paul Hilton) as a wife due to her beauty. However, Alexander is a cold and ruthless man who shows no affection for Katherine. She is left with only the empty title of mistress of the estate, facing harsh torment and oppression in her life.
