In a scrap metal recycling plant in Czechoslovakia after the “February Victory,” chef Pavel (played by Václav Neckár), who refuses to work on Sundays due to his religious beliefs, is on strike with a labor group consisting of a prosecutor, a philosophy professor, a dairy farm owner, and others. Their former worker, now their leader, is ordered to bring a film crew to shoot a promotional movie here. When the director learns of the strike, he storms off, but this filming brings Pavel and the beautiful female inmate Keta (played by Jitka Zelenohorská), who is serving her sentence nearby, together. The trade union sends someone to mediate the strike, but they are questioned by the dairy farm owner, who then disappears. Meanwhile, the police officer guarding the female inmates gets married, leaving the workers to gossip about philosophy and art while peeking at the female prisoners. Soon, a group of Young Pioneers arrives for a visit, and the professor questions their counselor, who also goes missing. Keta finally agrees to Pavel’s marriage proposal, and they hold an absentee wedding. In the end, a high-ranking official inspects the local work, and Pavel raises the same question to him as he did to the professor… The film was banned for 21 years and won the Golden Bear at the 1990 Berlin International Film Festival and the FIPRESCI Prize.
