God and the devil Mephistopheles (played by Emil Jannings) gamble for Faust's soul. Mephistopheles insists that the learned and wise scholar Faust (played by Gösta Ekman) will gradually fall into depravity under the temptation of desire, while God believes that Faust's reason will ultimately conquer desire. Mephistopheles transforms into a black dog and comes to Faust's side, becoming a servant ready to fulfill any of his wishes at any time. Under Mephistopheles' guidance, Faust becomes youthful again and encounters the pure and kind Margaret (played by Camilla Horn). Under Mephistopheles' trickery, Margaret falls in love but accidentally kills her mother, and her brother also dies at Faust's hands. Despairing, Margaret ultimately ends up in prison for killing her child, while Faust's journey is far from over.
