In the future, due to a significant catastrophe, the few remaining humans have turned from living on the surface to living underground. This vast underground city was originally designed to operate for only 200 years, with light as the sole source of illumination. However, as time passes, the 200 years are fast approaching, and the core design of the city is nearing its lifespan. Power outages are becoming more frequent, and the light that they depend on is about to disappear in this city of dimness. As good friends, Lena (played by Saoirse Ronan) and Doon (played by Harry Treadaway) often play amidst the complex pipes of the dim city. One day, Lena discovers an ancient document that contains instructions on how to escape the city of Ember. With the light of Ember about to go out, what secrets lie outside the city? Is there a land of brightness? Lena and Doon decide to follow the directions in the ancient document to leave the city and see the outside world in hopes of saving the fading city.
