The story takes place in the early years of the Republic of China, where the government exploits the citizens, leaving them struggling to survive. The young man Chuqi (played by Zhou Junwei) meets Yingchun at the market and helps save Tian Juan (played by Jing Tian) from a rogue, winning her affection. This leads to a rivalry between Chuqi and Yingchun for Tian Juan's attention. Soon, strange occurrences plague the town, with several wealthy individuals mysteriously dying overnight, including the elderly Tian. Master Mao (played by Liu Jiahui) learns of this and takes Chuqi to the Tian residence to investigate, only to be captured by Inspector Zhu (played by Ba Liangjin), who secretly loves Tian Juan.
