In a closed-off, conservative American town, a mysterious woman named Grace (played by Nicole Kidman) arrives. She is beautiful and kind, escaping from pursuers. The town's writer, Tom, persuades the villagers to let her stay temporarily for her safety, but the condition is that Grace must work various farm jobs in return. The villagers agree, but soon discover that Grace is a wanted fugitive. They want to drive her away, but eventually agree that if she works harder, she can stay. Grace works day and night, but cannot escape misfortune. After a police manhunt, a townsman rapes Grace. This ignominious act opens the floodgates: people begin to insult her freely, and even Tom reveals his true colors, shedding his kind facade. Grace is reduced to a dog in the town, working and suffering, and her kind heart begins to change gradually. The townspeople have no idea that Grace's mysterious background will turn the humiliation they inflict into a future disaster for them.
