The film is a prequel to "X" and tells the story of the evil old lady Pearl (played by Mia Goth) in her youth. To gain her freedom, Pearl marries a man named Howard (played by Alistair Sewell), only to find out that shortly after their marriage, Howard is drafted and goes off to war. Initially, there is correspondence between Howard and Pearl, but as time passes, they lose contact. After Howard leaves, Pearl lives on his farm with her father (Matthew Sunderland) and mother (Tandi Wright). Every day, Pearl has to deal with countless farm chores while also taking care of her paralyzed father. Her greatest wish is to leave the farm and become a star. One day, her sister-in-law Misty (Emma Jenkins-Purro) comes to visit and tells Pearl that someone has come to town to audition dancers for performances in the military, which is Pearl's only chance to leave the farm.
