In the 1950s and 60s, a frantic girl named Christine (Amber Heard) runs through the wilderness. She sets fire to a nearby farmhouse, but is ultimately captured by the police and sent to North Bay Psychiatric Hospital. Due to Christine's aggressive behavior, she is placed in a special ward, where her freedom is restricted, and the only people she can see besides the cold doctors and nurses are the girls next door: Emily (Mamie Gummer), Zoe (Laura-Leigh), and Iris (Lyndsy Fonseca). From the girls, Christine learns that the mysterious Dr. Skiner (Jared Harris) seems to be conducting some experiments on them.
