Tomonori Shingyou (played by Masaharu Fukuyama) is a lawyer who receives a very challenging case one day. The defendant, Takashi Misumi (played by Hiroshi Abe), has been accused of murder and cruelly burning the body. In order to save Takashi from the death penalty, Tomonori begins to meticulously analyze the case. However, what puzzles him is that Takashi's motive for murder remains shrouded in mystery. Even Takashi's own explanations about his motive keep changing. To uncover the truth of the case, Tomonori visits the victim's wife, Mitsue (played by Yuki Saito), whose strange attitude deepens Tomonori's suspicions. Saki (played by Suzu Hirose), the victim's daughter, appears, finally providing some clues to the case, but these various threads lead the entire truth down a different path.
