Staff Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) carries out his last mission on the battlefield. While investigating the area with local translator Ahmed, their unit suddenly falls under ambush during a patrol. Fortunately, both men survive, but unfortunately, they are the only two survivors. Kinley is severely injured during the ambush, putting them in grave danger and increasing their risk of escape. As the enemy relentlessly pursues them, Ahmed risks his life to carry the wounded Kinley through several miles of rugged terrain, finally reaching a safe zone. Back home, Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family have not been granted permission to leave the war zone as promised. Determined to repay the debt and protect Ahmed and his family, he returns to the war zone to rescue them before local militias arrive.
