Dr. Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) is a genius scientist who, aspiring to create life like God, ignores the opposition of his professors, leaves college, and goes to a castle on a mountain with his assistant to conduct experiments on human bodies. He collects various body parts from graveyards and steals a brain from the school laboratory, using these to construct a human body. His fiancée, Elizabeth (Mae Clarke), worried about him, goes to the castle laboratory with a friend (John Boles) and a professor to find Frankenstein. On this stormy night, Frankenstein's experiment is completed—he uses lightning to bring the body on the operating table to life. However, days later, the monster created by the scientist begins to spiral out of control, first killing the scientist's assistant, then starting to attack the professor and the scientist. The exhausted scientist is taken home to prepare for his wedding, leaving the monster for the professor to handle. But the monster kills the professor, escapes from the laboratory, and slowly makes its way toward the village, even drowning a little girl. Meanwhile, Frankenstein is completely unaware during his wedding...
