In a small American town, local mob boss Leo and his close friend and assistant Tom (Gabriel Byrne) both fall in love with the gangster Bernie (John Turturro)'s sister, Verna (Marcia Gay Harden). The two friends even turn against each other in their rivalry for Verna's affection. Meanwhile, another mob boss, Caspar, tries to recruit Tom, promising to help him pay off his gambling debts, but the condition is that he must kill Bernie. To win Verna's heart, Tom secretly helps Bernie hide and claims to Caspar that he has killed Bernie. Unexpectedly, Bernie bites back, threatening Tom to help him eliminate Caspar or else he will reappear. The situation quickly spirals out of control.
