Tom (Mel Gibson), the president of United Airlines, has achieved remarkable success after years of hard work, but he recently got caught up in a bribery scandal involving the union. Fortunately, his happy family always provides him with comfort in times of trouble. One day, Tom and his family attend a children's science fair, and amidst the chaotic crowd, his son Sean is kidnapped. The kidnappers quickly call, demanding a ransom of two million dollars. Meanwhile, ransom negotiation expert Lonnie brings in the FBI to handle the case. The leader of the kidnappers is Jimmy (Gary Sinise), a New York police officer whose advanced counter-surveillance tactics leave the police at a loss. Tom’s cooperation with the police leads to a series of setbacks. Desperate, Tom decides to take a risk by publicly turning the ransom into a bounty for capturing the kidnappers. In response, Jimmy retaliates, leading to a tense psychological battle between the two. Jimmy's gang starts to splinter under Tom's strong psychological attack, but Jimmy devises a new counterstrategy. In the face-off between the two strong men, who will emerge victorious?
