The death of their son Joseph plunged the Duhler family into endless sorrow. The father would furrow his brows all day long, while the mother insisted that her son had not left them, but would transform into a spirit and return to her side. The oppressive atmosphere at home made the little daughter Silant feel very lonely, as no one paid attention to her feelings. One day, her cousin Frances (played by Elizabeth Earl) temporarily moved in with Silant, as her father was about to go to war. Frances's arrival brought joy back to Silant, and the two spent their days together, passing the time. Joseph had been deeply fascinated by the study of spirits when he was alive and even built a small castle for them. At Frances's strong urging, Silant took her into the garden to start searching for traces of spirits. To their surprise, they actually found a spirit and even took a photo of it.
