The new BBC drama "The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister" is a bold and passionate series written by Jane English and directed by James Kent, starring Maxine Peake and set to air on BBC2. Anne Lister (1791-1840) was a landowner, entrepreneur, traveler, and diarist from Yorkshire, and she was also a lesbian. Although society at the time required her to keep this secret as much as possible, she rebelled against societal norms by living with her same-sex partner. Anne documented her life, love, and emotions in a diary of four million words, filled with allure and heartbreaking sincerity. A significant portion of the diary is encoded, and recent decoding efforts have provided new insights into this woman, often regarded as the first modern lesbian in Britain. Anne Lister's extraordinary diary and her authentic yet extraordinary life form the foundation of the film and television work "The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister." This single 90-minute episode features a star-studded cast, including Anna Madeley, Susan Lynch, Christine Bottomley, Gemma Jones, Dean Lennox Kelly, and Tina O’Brien. A documentary released alongside this series, narrated by comedian and presenter Sue Perkins, tells the story of Anne Lister and decodes her diary for us. Janice Hadlow, the controller of BBC2, said: “It’s like the world of the Brontë sisters, but with a twist that differs from what one might expect. These extraordinary diaries reveal the life and love in 19th-century Yorkshire, and are arguably more remarkable and astonishing than the classic novels you may have read.”
