The story takes place in the late Qing Dynasty, where Xi Fangping (played by Sha Yi) has a father who is an honest and upright inspector but is falsely accused by corrupt officials and beheaded. This scene is witnessed by the vengeful female ghost Xiao Xie (played by Xi Yuli), who decides to help clear Xi Fangping's father's name. On the night of the vigil for his father, Xiao Xie appears and reveals her plan to Xi Fangping. Led by Xiao Xie, the two venture into the Underworld, only to find that the King of Hell and judges there are also corrupt officials, who not only fail to clear Xi Fangping's father's name but also cause Xi Fangping to suffer greatly.
